Many congregational leaders focus on whether their congregation is able to pay their bills: the pastor, her health insurance and pension, apportionments, the mortgage and the light bill. If so, they feel they are doing okay -- as if a congregation were primarily a business. But a congregation is not primarily a business! We are a people called together by Christ to draw near to Him and one another and then to serve people beyond ourselves in His name. In other words, the bottom line is not the bottom line. Congregations should be institutionally strong, but more than that, they should be missionally vital.
